“You really
should knock more often.”
Rogue
opened one eye as water dripped down her face and shot Todd a baleful
glare. “Yeah, well, they shouldn’t go at
it like horny rabbits every time the door’s closed.” She reached blindly for her face cloth and
set about scrubbing the make up from her skin.
“I swear, I can’t hardly go into a room in this place without seeing
Kurt’s blue ass.”
“Ew.” Todd
shoved himself away from the doorframe and stifled a yawn. “It’s late…”
“Mmmm,”
Rogue murmured by way of agreement. She
could feel him draw close behind her, not close enough to touch her but close
enough for her to feel his presence. He
did not radiate heat like some people but she still knew when he was near. “I still got a ton of work to do on that
stupid project Storm gave me.” She
sighed and, dashing the last of the water from her eyes, looked in the mirror
to meet his gaze. “Last time I listen to
Kitty and Jubes.”
He
snorted. “Well, I’m glad you didn’t go,”
he shrugged, tracing one long finger lightly down her spine through her night
shirt. The slight ridge of her vertebrae
made him frown a bit but he wisely kept silent.
He knew it was neither the time nor place to express concern over her
state of nutrition. “It was a shambles.
Totally bogus, ya know?” He smiled as
she shifted, turned to face him and sit on the edge of the counter. She was always and would always be taller
than him but he did not care, even as she looked down at him from her elevated height.
“Mmm,” she
agreed, cocking a brow in something akin to amusement but likely closer to just
plain tiredness. “I’m glad they found
the plane,” she added, stretching her long legs out to cross her ankles behind
Todd’s thighs. It was the very start of
her ‘safe time’ and she was glad he had come to her. If not, she figured, she would have slept
through the entire narrow window of opportunity and had to wait an entire month
before being able to touch skin to skin again.
Todd
paused, his brows creeping up at the sight of Rogue’s half-smile. “Now?
Really?”
“Mmmm.” She slid from the counter, her legs still
around his, her body pressed between his and the counter. “Why not?
Everyone’s busy or in bed… I can wait a bit to start my project.” Her hands braced against the counter, she
carefully slid her sock-clad foot up his calf, the soft abrasion of fabric
against fabric, fabric against skin, the only sound in the bathroom for the
span of a handful of seconds. She cocked
her head to one side and her smile widened.
“Come on… you know you wanna…”
Rogue giggled slightly, the sound still foreign to her ears, as he
braced his own hands on either side of her hips, pressing her even more against
the granite countertop. “Ooooh, I’m
trapped… whatever shall I do?” she sighed in an exaggerated Southern accent,
fluttering her lashes. Todd snorted at
her mannerisms, an overblown stereotype if he had ever seen one, and leaned in
closer. Rogue gasped and pushed against
his shoulder with her fingertips. “Fresh!”
“Oh, so
we’re playing that huh?” He cleared his throat and leered suggestively at her
smiling countenance. “I’m afraid you’re
in my clutches now, fair maiden! You’ve been captured by the dread Pirate
Tolenksy!” With a maniacal cackle, he
swooped her into his arms and, grunting only slightly, tried to carry her into
the bedroom proper.
“OW!”
“Sorry!” he
yelped, readjusting so that she would not hit her head on the doorframe
again. “Mind your feet,” he added
helpfully, edging carefully through the doorway. Rogue sighed in relief as they made it
through and he grinned anew. “Where was
I? Oh, right. You have been captured by
the dread Pirate Tolensky! I give no quarter!”
“Alas,” she
swooned dramatically, “whatever will I do?”
She gasped and laughed aloud as he tossed her onto her bed and leapt up
to join her. She flung one arm over her
eyes and managed a shuddering sigh. “My
virtue is at stake! I’ll never forgive
you if you sully my person, sir!”
Todd barely
bit back a laugh at her accent and the fact she was peeking out from under her
elbow. Balanced precariously on her bed,
standing with his feet on either side of her hips, Todd reached for the filmy
scarf she had draped across an unlit lamp by her bed.[1] A few twists and he had managed a rakish
(mostly) headscarf that covered one eye in lieu of an eye patch and he assayed
a piratical snarl. “Prepare to
surrender…”
“I swear,
Todd, if you use the word booty in that sentence…”
He
snickered. “Okay then… prepare to be
boarded!” Rogue’s raucous laughter
earned her a frown. “It’s not nice to
laugh at a pirate you know!”
“What’re
you gonna do? Keel haul me?” she mocked gently before assuming her play persona
once more. “Oh, alas and alack! No one to save me! I must give in to the dark
lusts of the dread Pirate Tolensky!” She
flung her arms wide as Todd bent to her, misjudging the distance due to his
altered depth perception. The back of
her hand made contact with his cheek and he reared back. “Sorry!” she cried as Todd swore fluently,
his balance shot as he tumbled backwards.
A dull thud brought silence to the bedroom. “Todd?”
No response came from the floor.
Cautiously, Rogue sat up and leaned over the edge of the bed. “Todd?
Sweetie?” The eye she could see was
closed and a trickle of blood edged out from under the scarf. “God damn it,” she hissed, sliding to the
floor to sit beside him. “Don’t be dead… I’ll kill you if you’re dead.”
[1] Yeah,
that whole scarf over the lamp DOES lend romantic ambience but it’s also a fire
hazard! Mind your fabrics and the type
of bulb. Or just get a colored
bulb. Or just turn off the light and
play blind man’s bluff.
