“In Brooklyn, you get a warning shot!”
[1] Todd rubbed the sore spot on his arm with no small amount of
annoyance. “Watch it!”
Kitty frowned, flattening herself
against the wall as another volley of rubber pellet gunfire erupted from the
ceiling mounted guns in the Danger Room. “I didn’t program this!” she
shouted above the racket. “Kurt! Shut off the sim!” She waved her
arms, trying to get the attention of the teenaged mutant in the control room
and failing miserably. “KURT!”
“DUCK!” Todd leapt across the
Danger Room, pushing off one wall with his powerful legs and tackling Kitty to
the floor as another burst of dummy strafing sprayed across the space.
With a whoosh of breath, he pinned Kitty to the floor, noticing with some mild
disconcertion that she was half-phased through the rubber matting lining the
surface beneath her. “Ew…”
“Mind getting off?” she gasped, breath
rushing painfully back into her lungs. The sim was still going full-force
around them, a mock up of a military installation that was not one of her
finest efforts but certainly kept the blood pumping.
“Nah, I don’t mind, but Rogue might!” He
grinned, wiggling his brows in what he thought of as a disarming manner but
served only to make him look mildly confused and a bit like he was experiencing
some mild variant of Saint Vitus Dance. [2]
Kitty grunted in a most unladylike
fashion and pushed Todd off of her, rolling to her feet but keeping low, well
below the current height of the automatic gunfire. With a quick glare at
the control room where Kurt was, apparently, slacking on his monitoring duties,
she moved as quickly as she could to the thick metal stalk of machinery at the
far end of the room and shoved her hand through the casing, the faint tingle of
electricity as her phased form passed through the wiring making her shiver
slightly. There was another, almost half-hearted spate of rapid gunfire
then silence. “Todd,” Kitty said carefully, “go give Kurt a warning,
would you?”
“Huh?” He pushed his long fringe out of
his eyes, the pale yellow-green orbs fixing Kitty with a look of mild
confusion. “Warning for what?”
“Tell him he has ten seconds to get out
of there before I come in after him.”
Kurt winced as Todd slammed into the
control room, nearly running into Logan. “Sorry,” the German teenager
muttered, glancing at the mutant known as Wolverine. “I got
distracted…”
Todd nodded, panting mildly.
“Kitty said you have ten seconds before she…”
“Half Pint,” Logan called, cutting off
Todd’s flow of words, “go finish unpacking your stuff. I’m having a word
with Kurt!” Silence reigned in the control room for a long moment, then a
heavy sigh made it’s way into the space between the three males.
“Fine,” Kitty snapped. “Next time
I program a sim, it’s going to have fluffy, cute bunnies. Fluffy, cute
bunnies never gave someone a black eye!”
Kurt groaned. “I should have hit
‘pause’ on the program…”
Logan snapped his fingers, impatient to
the point of seriously considering grabbing Kurt by the front of his uniform
and shaking him. “Stop talking and listen! You have until five p.m. to
get your things together for the trip. Todd,” he added, stopping the other
teenager from slinking out of the room, “you’re going too. You can be
useful.” He fixed the vaguely amphibious mutant with a stern glare.
“Take something warm. You know how you get in cold weather.”
“Whoa…” Todd stood up as straight as he
could manage. “What’s going on? Why am I going somewhere cold? If
this is about the mayonnaise balloons, I swear, it was Jamie and Rahne’s
idea…Remy just got in the way!”
Logan blinked. “Mayonnaise
balloons?” Shaking his head as if to clear away the image, he reached out
and pulled Todd into the control room by the arm, out of the line of sight for
the electric eye that was keeping the door open. “Both of you listen to
me and listen well. This is to be kept quiet. I mean quiet. No telling
girlfriends, best friends, priests, rabbis, anyone. Got it?” He did
not wait for assent before pressing onwards. “Professor Xavier is still
on his little vacation and will be for another week so this is all on us, got
it? This isn’t his idea or doing.”
Kurt felt a tiny tremor of apprehension
grow into a large spiral of dry-mouthed curiosity. Why was Logan being so
quick and certain to absolve the Professor of this? What was about to happen?
“Logan…”
“Magneto and Mystique have been out of
communications for two weeks. They went to Muir Island after
Theresa—she’s missing. We haven’t made this widely known because we know
how you all get about these things and we can’t afford another mass chaos
episode right now.” He pushed himself away from the control panel and
headed for the door. “Be ready by five. Scott is coming with
us. Kitty and Jean are going to be charged with guarding our Shi’ar
guest…” he paused, sighing under his breath. “Five.”
Kurt and Todd nodded in mute unison.
When the door shut behind Logan, Todd shifted uncomfortably, facing Kurt alone
for the first time in weeks. Kurt closed his eyes and sighed loudly,
pinching the bridge of his nose as his head began to throb. “Want me to
take your mind off this?” Todd asked nonchalantly.
“That’s impossible.”
“Want to bet?” Todd’s lips curved
into a wicked grin. “I just felt up Kitty.”
