WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (NC-17)
Disclaimers: This fic is from the mind of Desert Rose—she
sent the plotbunnies fully formed, I just filled in the blanks! This story is written using characters that
belong to nice people with many lawyers and copyrights. This is set in an alternate universe to the
current XME situation but has the same characters and many similarities to the
series… Just some glaring differences. J The title comes from a classic SciFi
movie. Go watch it. Good stuff.
“This
sucks, man,” Kurt Wagner sighed.spanspan>“My
holo’s busted again!”
Scott
Summers made a face and said, “Tough break man…oh, would you lookee here…a
spare, all ready to go and everything!”
“Verdammten
technogenius in the verdammten house!”
Kurt slapped the working holo projector on and activated it,
transforming in a blink from a blue, demonic-looking mutant to a
normal-appearing teenaged boy….with a blue, demonic-appearing tail.
“You
showin’, mon ami,” Remy LeBeau, teasingly called The Prince of Thieves (though
the title actually did have a ring of truth to it), sauntered into the
kitchen and headed straight for the coffee pot. “C’mon, it not so bad, homme.
Jus’ one more day an’ it Spring Break!”
1'> Kurt made a
rude noise as he adjusted his tail to hide beneath his shirt and pants. “When can we turn on the air conditioner
here? My fur is sticking to me!”
Remy raised
a brow over his coffee mug. “When you
pay de bills, you can run de damn ting whenever you want, homme. Go to school!’
Scott
waited until Kurt was safely out of earshot before saying to Remy, “I got a
call this morning from Bel. She’s on
her way back and she says there’s something brewing big time.”
“Oh? Comme quoi?”
“She
wouldn’t go into detail—said the line wasn’t secure. I swear, you guild members are way too into the X Files
sometimes.”
an>“an>“Mebbe we
be a suspicious sort, it sit save our lives too many time to count,” Remy said
seriously, setting his mug down as if it were the most fragile thing in the
world, a sign of his whirling thoughts.
“When she gonna be in?”
“Actually,
any time now. She was calling from
Baton Rouge and was in the car at the time…”
Remy
nodded. “Den we bes’ be ready when she
get here.”
“Want me to
go get Kurt? I can probably catch him
before he gets to school…” Scott was halfway out the door before his cousin’s
voice drew him to a halt.
“Non, if we
need him, we get him den. Right now, we
jus’….be ready.” Somng ang about the
set of Remy’s jaw told Scott he knew more about Bel’s secret information than
he was letting on. Scott could only nod
grimly as a niggling worm of fear was born in his stomach.
“Ew, it’s
like, so hot!” Kitty Pryde
cursed the jeans she had on, the blouse that was sticking to her, and whoever
decided to place New Orleans in the subtropics. “Can we go bto Xto Xavier’s?”
Jean, looking as if the heat
did not even touch her, smiled and said, “Don’t be silly, Kitty. You have to blend in here. No one will believe that you graduated early
if they catch you running around town in spandex, looking for Magneto.”
“Talk about
a ticket to the looney bin!” Bobby crowed.
In a falsetto voice, supposed to be an imitation of Kitty’s actually
dulcet tones, he said, “But, like, officer, I was, like, looking for this, like
mutant man and I’m, like a mutant to!
No, I’m not, like skipping! I
totally swear! Like, duh!”
Kitty
glowered while her half sister, a young woman known as Rogue, laughed
raucously. “Hey, Bobby,” Kitty finally
said as the laughter died down.
“Yeah?”
“Like…this!”
She elbowed him in the stomach as she strode past him, heading for the rather
imposing entrance of St Francis of Assisi High School. an>
Jean sighed
and shook her head. “Remember, blend
in. No ice, no snow, no slicks, no
nothing! Non-mutant highschool boy, got it?”
“Sir, yes
sir!” Bobby snapped, clicking his heels together and saluting for
emphasis. “Recon at 0400 hours,
Xavier’s place, SIR!”
Rogue
grinned and rolled her eyes as Bobby dashed up the steps to catch up to
Kitty. “Think they’re gonna make it
through in one piece?” she asked Jean, cousin to both her and Kitty, though
their relations were not realized until Xavier found them all through
Cerebro.
Jean shook
her head and sighed. “It’s not them I’m
worried about…it’s the others. Xavier
said that there’s been mutant activity here and part of the reason we came is
to find out who they are and who they’re working with. You know Kitty has a temper and with the
recent developments in her mutation, I’m almost afraid of what will happen the
first time someone brings her up short…”
“Bobby can
keep her in line,” Rogue soothed. “He’s
much calmer than she is and the two of them are thick as thieves. He won’t let anything bad happen to her. At least not while he’s near.”
The two
women exchanged glances and said as one—“Self preservation!” They laughed and headed back towards Jean’s
rental car, unaware of steesteely blue eyes watching their every move.
Kurt could
not believe his amazing luck. The most
beautiful girl he had ever seen, and she was sitting across from him in
biology! He could only stare as she
wrinkled her nose at something her friend saiiggliggling while she made the
face, then turning to look at the chalk board to copy the class assignment into
her notebook. “Kitty” was written in
block letters across the top of her assignment pad and Kurt sighed. Kitty…That has to be the most wonderful
name in the world! He found himself
enrapture by the way the early morning light played through her hair, gold
strands mixed with dark brown, a hint of red near her face. He was so wrapped up in staring at her that
he did not notice she was staring back until she spoke. “Hi.”
Kurt’s
mouth went dry. “H…h…hi!” he finally
managed.
Kitty
giggled. “I’m Kitty. This is my friend Bobby.” She elbowed Bobby and he smiled, extending
his hand to shake Kurt’s. At the sight
of Kurt’s oddly-shaped hand, Kitty frowned.
“It’s
genetic,” Kurt sighed. yes"> “You high or something?” he asked, steering the jeep through the
streets of New Orleans with a skill born from long practice.
“Klappe,
Scott! I’m in love!”
Remy
snorted. “Wit who? De mirror?
You not knowin’ any gals.”
“You’re
wrong—I met the most perfect, beautiful girl in the world today! Her name is Kitty and she just moved here
from New York with her sister and cousin!”
It was in a bad part of New Orleans, projects lining both sides
of the streets and, in the quickening late afternoon, ringing with the sound of
a gunshot. Remy seemed nonplussed—New Orleans
was his home and he loved it all, beautiful and ugly. Scott circled the block after he let Remy and Kurt out, giving
Kurt time to get the older mutant inside the cemetery. Parking far enough away from the thick,
oven-burial[1] lined walls
that they would not rouse the suspicion of a passing police officer, Scott
locked the Jeep and pulled a map out of his back pocket, acting every inch the
tourist as he jogged across the street towards St Louis Cemetery One. Pretending to scrutinize the historical
marker on the gate, he was well aware of movement between the crypts and
wondered what was keeping Kurt when he felt a tug behind his navel, then found
himself standing between two old stone mausoleums, the whitewash peeling badly. “About time,” he hissed to Kurt, who was
grinning broadly.
“Sorry,
mein Freund. I had to hide from the
caretaker. Remy ‘accidentally’ knocked
him out…oops!” he said softly, spreading his hands in a gesture of apology.
“You are
speaking loud enough to wake the dead!” a feminine voice growled from behind a
tomb. Belladonna, resplendent in black
leather, her blonde hair bound back in a tight braid, stepped out and glared at
her teammates. “The one we seek is near…as
are others.”
“Who is it
we ‘seek’?” Scott sighed. “If this is a
wild goose chase, Bel…”
“We seek
Death, you idiot!” she bit out. "> “This
mutant calls himself Death[2]. He has the appearance of a rotting corpse
and he can send some form of psychic energy that effectively renders the victim
paralyzed. They either suffocate or, if
he’s feeling gener he he reaves them.”
“Reaves?”
Kurt gulped. Belladonna smiled and ran
a finger across her throat in a slicing motion. “Oh. Reaves.”
Remy’s
silent approach made them all jump when he spoke. “Dere be someone here odder
den us an’ dis Death guy…”
“What do
you mean?” Scott asked, already moving away with Remy and Kurt, Belladonna
falling back to circle around the graves, scanning for signs of their
quarry.
Remy
nodded, indicating that Kurt should take the right flank, and said sotto voce “Dere
be mo’ people here, bein’ stealthy, like dey lookin’ for de same ting we are…”
“Think they’re
with this other mutant?” Kurt asked just as softly, his superb hearing picking
up every word Remy said. He strained
and could barely make out the sound of leaves crunching under foot, but just
faintly. Whoever else was here was an
expert at covert ops, it seemed.
Remy shook
his head and motioned for silence. A
few quick hand gestures told Kurt to keep bearing right and motioned Scott to
stay to the left. Remy took the alley
between the crypts and soon they were all alone, each to their own
devices. Kurt dropped to all fours,
more comfortable in his prowling, and scented the air for unknown
entitites. The faint odor of decay—of flesh
and brick and earth—overlay the tang of…perfume? “Was?” he whispered to himself
as a leg—a decidedly female leg—swung into view, the foot heading straight for
his face. “Shit!” he cried, flinging
himself backwards and grabbing the foot, taking the girl with him.
“Son of a
bitch!” she cried, then vanished. A
series of quick, punishing blows landed on Kurt’s chest and neck, his assailant
unseen, until a sharp cry of “Oh! Oh my
God!” rang out, Kitty Pryde materializing before him. She held out a hand to pull him to his feet, blushing wildly.
Kurt
stared, open mouthed and panting, at the girl he had fallen suddenly and
cruelly in love with. “What…how…I mean…what?”
Kitty
closed her eyes, aware of some sound that he was not. “Not now. Run!” She had seized his arm and was trying to
pull him but Kurt remained stone-still.
“Run!” she cried again.
“Nein! What the Hell are you doing here? What’s going on?”
“Fuck!” she
swore, her face coloring lividly. “Too
late!” She pushed him aside and strode
forward, raising one hand in a “stop” gesture.
Kurt was
disoriented. First Kitty appearing and
disappearing, now her sudden forcefulness…He shook his head and turned to speak
again, but his voice froze in his throat.
Remy lay on the ground ten feet away, his eyes open wide and frozen. A corpse—what looked like a corpse, what
Kurt realized then was the one called Death, stood over the Cajun, head thrown back and hand extended, an almost
visible light between his palm and Remy’s chest. Kitty cried out something Kurt did not understand and a shockwave
rattled his teeth, knocking him to the ground.
The rest became a blur as his instincts kicked in, launching him towards
Death, putting himself between Kitty and the deadlier mutant. Kitty fell back and there was a resounding
crack as she landed on a marble-topped grave.
Rogue was flinging a glove aside as she swooped from atop a crypt,
making Kurt dimly realize that these other people Remy sensed had to be
mutants, too. A red head, Jean, he
would later learn her name was, lay near Remy, her bright hair trailing on the
grass. There was a furious blast of red light and a hiss of melting ice and the
world went black for Kurt.
[1] Cemetery
space is a premium in NOLA and the water table is high. It was common practice for a very long time
to intern the bodies in a mausoleum or a semi-above ground grave then, after
the flesh had rotted, disinter them and fold the boneto ato a neat packet to
place in cubbies in the walls of the cemetery with a plaque covering it rat
tha
than a tombstone. That way, graves and
crypts could be reused ad infinitum.
[2] I know there’s
a Death in the Marvel Comics but this one is different. I just couldn’t think of a new mutant on my
own. *sigh *
